Overview

Tenders are invited from suitably qualified construction contractors for the works as described in the Scope of Works Background: McKenna Stopbank is the first major portion of the Westport flood protection scheme. Originally part of the “quick wins” this embankment cuts off an overflow route into Cats creek/abattoir drain.

This is why this package of works is one of the first to be constructed. This package of works signals a start in the construction of the overall scheme, and is crucial to the WCRC and ratepayers that this project is a success, as this initial piece of work will be used as reference for the on-going success of the scheme.

This scheme is being constructed on privately owned land so working with the landowner is crucial to the project, we need to keep the landowner onboard and happy with how the project is tracking, so all construction activities need to be undertaken with the landowner in mind to minimise their disruption to farming operations and to leave the site clean, tidy, free draining, without rocks on the surface with hopefully a good grass strike. Briefly, the works include: • Establish working area, temporary access, equipment, environmental controls (lay down/haul areas, stockpile bunding , clean water management) and traffic management; • Topsoil strip (300 mm depth cut) along the extent of the stopbank footprint, stockpile and later re-lay over the new constructed areas (on top of design levels); • Pipe work, drain rehabilitation, swale cut; • Cart imported certified fill approximately 11,000m3 and place in 250mm uncompacted lifts. Test material as per requirement to meet specification. Shape and compact new stopbank profile as per design; • Topsoiling and reinstatement; • Fencing and access way construction; • Work alongside farm owners to minimise business interruption; • Preparation and submission of as-built drawings; • Associated project management and site supervision traffic management, erosion and sediment control, survey setout; • Other miscellaneous items described or implied in the specifications or drawings.
