The Wellington City Council (WCC) is wishing to replace a retaining wall outside 15 Veronica Street, Brooklyn, Wellington. The existing wall comprises of a deteriorating concrete cribwall and set to be replaced with an anchored shotcrete wall.
The assessment of the wall completed in 2018 identified extensive structural damage of both header and stretcher elements. Spalling and cracking of concrete frequently exposes the reinforcement in each member; where rebar was exposed, corrosion was so advanced that flakes and shards of rusted steel could be peeled or pried off.
Veronica Street and the associated footpath is situated immediately above the existing wall and 88m in length. Moderately dense vegetation persists beneath the wall with a number of large, well-established trees. At the wall toe ground slopes at varying angles, and in some places steeply. The max wall height is 3.6m.
Overhead and underground services are present across the site. A stormwater outfall, manhole and open stormwater channel is present in front of the wall.
