Overview

The Patent Slip Jetty in Evans Bay was approved for removal by Council in 2018. It has been closed off to the public since 2008 due to unsafe and deteriorated condition of the structure. Having been built in 1922 (the last remaining of two jetties) and transferred from the Harbour Boar to Council in 1989, the jetty no longer serves a use for the patent slip, which was decommissioned in1985.Due to the jetty’s heritage protection, consent is being lodged to secure approval to have the jetty removed. Removal will ensure public safety and reduce the current marine hazard it presents.

WCC are seeking a suitable contractor to complete these works. The contractor must be a specialist contractor with marine and underwater experience and expertise. As part of the wharf may be retained for heritage reasons, the contractor will also need experience in wharf construction. This will be a mandatory criterion for selection. Preferably the contractor will have engineering capability and if not, should include a provision to engage with an external Engineer and Heritage Adviser. The scope of the work requires safe removal, retrieval, disposal and potential reuse of the jetty’s structural components, including piles, bearers, joists and decking timber. For example, some of the material could be reused as furniture for the proposed cycleway in this area. Materials in good condition can be reused to help retain the first couple of bays, which might be preserved for heritage reasons. The resource consenting and public engagement for the project is outside the scope of this job. However the Contractor will required to apply for building consent for rebuilding the two bays.

Further information is contained in the RFP drawings, specification and consent.
