The Waikato Regional Council (WRC) operates projects that encourage and support landowner efforts to improve water quality, soil erosion and biodiversity on private land. This includes encouraging native plantings on properties throughout the region.
Due to a marked increase in the number of landowners undertaking planting projects, there is a need to ensure they are getting the right plants for their project – good quality eco-sourced plants at a reasonable cost. To do this the Waikato Regional Council runs an annual native plant supply programme. The purpose of this programme is to:
• Ensure plants provided to landowners are good quality
• Bulk purchase plants to secure plants at a low cost
• Motivate landowners to undertake native planting
• Ensure appropriate species selection
• Ensure plants are eco-sourced
The Waikato region is split up into 5 areas and each year one nursery per area is contracted to supply the required number and species of plants. There are 8 individual RFQs for this project, each associated with a specific growing area.
