Waikato Regional Council invites tenders from suitably qualified and experienced contractors to undertake maintenance control of possums in the Arohena (Sectors 1 & 2) and Waotu Priority Possum Control Areas (PPCAs).
Arohena PPCA Sectors 1&2
Located approximately 15 kilometres north-west of Mangakino and boarded by Lake Arapuni on the east, the Arohena sectors cover 15,844 hectares of farmland. The area comprises land of moderate to steep contour with a mixture of dairy, dairy support and dry stock farming. Possum control will be carried out in bush, bush remnants, exotic forest, and a long vegetated river margin.
Waotu PPCA
The Waotu PPCA is located approximately 16 kilometres north-west of Tokoroa . Bounded by the Waikato River on the west the Waotu PPCA covers 5,929 hectares of farmland. The area comprises moderate to steep contoured land with predominantly dairy and dairy support land use. There is an active quarry within the control area, and a long vegetated river margin. The southern end of the PPCA is an area of converted forestry with many exotic plantation remnants now used for dairy.
The aim of these projects is to reduce and maintain possum densities to below five per cent Residual Trap Catch (RTC) for any ground control undertaken and three per cent RTC for any aerial control.
