The University is inviting proposals to replace its current Firewall appliances, which have reached the end of their asset lifecycle.
Five years ago, the University completed a project to replace its Cisco PIX firewall and Cisco VPN Concentrator with a Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) solution. This resulted in them being replaced with two Fortinet Fortigate 1240b firewall appliances that were configured for active-passive High-Availability. The Fortigate appliances provided the University with virtual security domains (VDOM’s), IPS, web and application filtering and SSL VPN functionality. The current Fortigate 1240b firewalls and Fortianalyzer 1000b appliances are now due for replacement.
The University is in the process of re-architecting the design of its network security infrastructure around the use of Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) technology. It is envisaged that the existing Firewall appliances will be replaced with a highly-available External Firewall solution, and ACI service insertion functionality which may, or may not, be a component of the External Firewall solution.
