Overview

University of Canterbury is planning to purchase Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectrometer.
The school will soon be in possession of an Ag source X-ray total scattering instrument. This instrument can be used to deduce the long-range structure of materials. The short-range structure, i.e. immediate environment of atoms in a material, will however remain unknown.
Given that knowledge of the short-range structure is essential to correlate a material structure to applications in catalysis, drug delivery, optics and information storage, UC is planning to invest in an Extended X-ray Absorption Fine-Structure (EXAFS) Spectrometer. This would represent the first instrument of this type in New Zealand, meaning not only an enhanced research capability, but also an increase in the number, and quality of publications because of external collaborations.
This project supports UC research and teaching activities and improves our ability to generate revenue from additional research grants.
