Te Kura is redeveloping its NCEA Level 1 courses for online delivery, with the aim that all students at these levels will be working online by 2018.
Te Kura’s NCEA courses were extensively redeveloped as part of the NZQA-driven standards review. NCEA booklets were digitised in 2013 into PDF format so they could be downloaded from the school’s online teaching and learning environment (OTLE), with the intention that the PDF booklets would be adapted for online delivery using an appropriate framework.
Te Kura uses the learning management system (LMS) Brightspace from a Canadian based company called Desire2Learn (D2L). This has been modified and tailored for our requirements and throughout this document it will be referred to by its current name of OTLE (online teaching and learning environment). We are currently on version 10.3 soon to be upgraded to version 10.4.
OTLE is a password-protected online LMS where Te Kura students can interact with each other and with their teachers in a secure online environment. OTLE is a very student-focused learning management system, designed to provide a learning experience which is personalised and responsive to each individual student.
Te Kura intends to complete the conversion of NCEA Level 1, NCEA Level 2 and NCEA Level 3 course documentation over the coming three years.
By 31 December 2015, Te Kura has a plan to adapt a subset of NCEA Level 1 resources for online delivery with the remaining NCEA Level 1 resources to be adapted by 30 June 2016.
We view this adaptation of existing resources for online delivery as requiring two components:
• Instructional design.
• Technical: Web development / design and uploading to the OTLE platform.
In order to provide resources to the project, Te Kura is establishing a Panel of Suppliers to provide external assistance to the project team. This request for proposal process follows on from the recent registration of interest phase which formed part of our planning process.
