Southland District Council (hereinafter“the Principal”), invites proposals to design and install a new Manapouri Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and all associated civil, building and pond storage works
at the Kepler North Block located at 701 Manapouri Te Anau Highway. The new plant will replace the existing Manapouri wastewater oxidation pond at 65 View Street, Manapouri.
The new Manapouri WWTP will receive wastewater influent via a new 8.1km wastewater rising main from Manapouri’s Terminus Pump Station (PS) located on View Street. The Contractor shall provide required
upgrades to the View Street Wastewater PS to facilitate the pumping of raw sewage to the new Manapouri WWTP site. These upgrades include installing new submersible and booster pumps as well as providing
additional storage at the PS. The construction of the new wastewater rising main will be carried out under a separate contract and be completed prior to commissioning the new Manapouri WWTP.
The new Manapouri WWTP will treat raw sewage from Manapouri township and feed treated wastewater into the existing Kepler Sub-surface Drip Irrigation (SDI) scheme for application to land. The Kepler SDI
scheme currently receives treated wastewater from the Te Anau WWTP which is irrigated to land via a network of drip emitters over a 28-hectare field. Appropriate treatment of wastewater is required to ensure
the final product from the new Manapouri WWTP achieves a quality appropriate for discharge to the SDI irrigation fields and ensures SDC can meet their discharge consent standards.
To limit the impacts on groundwater and soil quality and minimise nitrogen loading and nitrogen leaching, all of the wastewater must first pass through effective primary, secondary and tertiary treatment. Successful removal of solids and algae is also necessary to prevent fouling and clogging of the irrigation emitters.
The works will take place in the small town of Manapouri, Southland District, in the southwest corner of the South Island. The majority of the WWTP works will be carried out at the Kepler North Block located
at 701 Manapouri Te Anau Highway, adjacent to the existing Kepler SDI scheme. The PS upgrade and renewal works will be carried out at the existing View Street PS located at 65 View
Street, Manapouri.
