Fiji Fisheries - Corporate Policy Adviser
• 12-month assignment (175 working days) - first 6-months full-time residential in Suva
• Part-time for second 6-months on fly-in fly-out basis (up to 4 missions)
• New Zealand Government assistance programme
• Commencement in February 2018
The New Zealand Government is collaborating with Government of Fiji to support the Ministry of Fisheries improve management of inshore fisheries and compliance with fisheries rules. The Fisheries Corporate Policy Adviser will work closely with the Director of Fisheries and the Principal Fisheries Officer – Inshore Fisheries Management Division (IFMD) and provide advice and assistance to improve the operation of the IFMD. The Adviser will transfer corporate policy skills, experience and knowledge to Ministry of Fisheries staff. The objective of this role is to improve the functioning of the Ministry of Fisheries’ IFMD through support in the following key areas:
• Establish the IFMD within the Ministry of Fisheries, including (a) assisting in the identification and establishment of the appropriate sub-divisions of the IFMD and (b) suggesting priority activities for the IFMD.
• Support the integration of the Fisheries Divisions into the planning and priority setting of the Ministry of Fisheries, with emphasis on strengthening the operations and coordination of the IFMD and ensuring that priority inshore fishery issues are incorporated into the Annual Corporate Plan.
• Provide mentoring and support to the Director of Fisheries and Principal Fisheries Officer – IFMD
• Working through national legal authorities where needed for drafting, management plans, policies and regulations for inshore fisheries.
• Assist the Principal Fisheries Officer-IFMD and Director Fisheries on all corporate and policy matters and developing annual work plans, budgetary submissions for IFMD
• Advise and propose an appropriate fisheries policy and legislative framework for comprehensive functionality of the IFMD
