The current Northland tsunami siren network is reaching its expected lifespan of 10 years, the current network is made up of over 200 tsunami sirens in locations along Northlands coastline and are attached to relevant district power company infrastructure and connected to local power supplies.
The current tsunami sirens are owned by the relevant district council (of which there are three) and activated by the Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group.
The sirens endure harsh environmental impacts in coastal locations with New Zealand, including intense UV rays, ex-tropical cyclones, storms, intense rainfall and high winds.
The project objective is to upgrade the Northland tsunami siren network to meet the NZ Technical Standard (TS03/14) for tsunami warning sirens by replacing current tsunami sirens and future proof the system.
