Situated at the entrance to Whangarei Harbour 140 km from central Auckland, Northport is positioned to support economic growth in both Northland and Auckland.
Not only will Northport’s growth help New Zealand’s economy, it also has the potential to support the development of new industries and jobs for Northland. The vision for growth is based on a larger future footprint for Northport. The proposed development extends the current port footprint both east and west, lengthening the harbour frontage to 1390m and increasing the total land area to 75 hectares. This footprint will allow Northport to serve the Upper North Islands future freight needs and construct a shipyard to accommodate a floating dry dock.
The project, which includes the expansion of existing port facilities and the construction of a shipyard, supports the future needs of New Zealand, as well as enabling the development of the necessary infrastructure within Northport (Northland) to accommodate the installation and on-going operation of what will be, New Zealand’s largest marine engineering and maintenance support facility targeted at naval and commercial vessels.
Northland Inc as the regional economic development agency for Northland is looking to quantify the regional impact that this expansion will have on the Northland economy, as well as developing a wider understanding of other associated economic and social benefits, e.g. the ability to attract further public and private sector investment, flow on effects to other associated industries/sectors in the region, etc. The regional impact report is intended to be used as a way of building the economic and social benefits narrative, that can be utilised by a range of stakeholders to support the project.
