The Government has approved funding to invest in Project Pihi Kaha, Whangarei Hospital Redevelopment. This will replace a large section of the main hospital block.
The new Child health centre - CHC (named Tira Ora) is one of a suite of projects that form part of Project Pihi Kaha. The Masterplan for the Whangarei Hospital site proposes to progressively re-organise the part of the campus between Hospital Road and West End Avenue in preparation for the 42,000sqm redevelopment which will become Stage 1 of the New Whangārei Hospital. The existing CHC is situated just south of Carpark 16 between Hospital Road and West End Avenue. It sits within the new hospital footprint and will need to be demolished to make way for the new ASB and Ward Tower. Ahead of demolition, Tira Ora needs to be fully operational and thus is one of the first enabling works for the wider hospital redevelopment and is on the critical path.
Te Whatu Ora’s Te Tai Tokerau Child Health Centre (CHC) provides medical and non-medical outpatient and community services for the assessment and treatment of childhood medical, physical and developmental care for children aged 0-16 years and up to 21 years in some cases. A wide range of clinics, therapy and development services for children and adolescents focusing on a Multidisciplinary (MDT) approach are delivered from the CHC.
The works required for the wider Project Pihi Kaha is contingent on the prompt delivery of a fully operational CHC. Both the design and construction phases need to be fully coordinated and able to be delivered in a collaborative manner.
An RFP will be released in early 2023 (24/01/2023) to procure primary design services for Tira Ora.
