Overview

This procurement relates to asbestos removal, demolition and site clearance of Whangarei’s central stores. The central store is a large warehouse adjacent to the Jim Carney Centre on Hospital Road that previously served inward goods and logistics for the hospital. The store was decommissioned four years ago due to asbestos and needs to be demolished to make way for the radiation oncology project.

The central store demolition is scheduled to be completed between February and July 2023 as an enabling package to clear the building footprint ahead of LINAC construction.
The indicative budget for the demolition of the central stores building is $1.9M.

Provided that contractor performance is satisfactory through to completion of the central stores, the successful tenderer will be invited to bid for a further two separable portions as outlined below.

Separable portion One: The existing Whānau House will be replaced with a new Whānau House at 53 Hospital Road. The existing timber-clad Whānau House is situated adjacent to Carpark 16 between Hospital Road and West End Avenue. The House is located within the new Whangarei hospital footprint and therefore is required to be demolished as one of the first enabling works for the proposed hospital redevelopment.
The indicative demolition budget is $250,000 and the works are programmed to take place in early-2024, following completion of construction of the new whanau house.

Separable portion Two: The existing Child Health Centre (CHC) is situated just south of Carpark 16 between Hospital Road and West End Avenue. The Centre is located within the new Whangarei hospital footprint and therefore is required to be demolished as one of the first enabling works for the proposed hospital redevelopment.
The indicative budget is $830,000 and the works are scheduled in mid-2026 (i.e. after the new Child Health facility has been constructed and services transferred).
