Overview

The key objective of this procurement is to develop a standardised Afforestation Framework based on effective methods identified for successful regeneration and restoration projects.
The purpose of this framework is to provide reliable guidance to landowners based on their afforestation objectives (e.g., enhancing biodiversity, carbon sequestration, erosion control).
The outputs of this 12-month long research project will contribute to two different research programmes.
The Native Afforestation Programme (NAP) aims to address the cost and establishment challenges associated with native forest regeneration.
The Maximising Forest Carbon (MFC) programme has two key research areas:

-improving the understanding and measurement of indigenous forest carbon stocks for implementation in the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), and

-identifying more efficient and cost-effective methods for measuring forest carbon, particularly through the potential application of remote sensing technology.

This research project will contribute to both NAP and MFC by collecting and retrospectively analysing data from native forest restoration initiatives across New Zealand.
For this work, we would expect, at minimum, the remeasurement or establishment of at least 20 Permanent Sample Plots, at multiple locations, to be remeasured or established during the field collection.
