Te Uru Rākau – New Zealand Forest Service (TUR – NZFS) will soon be going to market for a supplier/s who can establish a short rotation forestry experimental planting programme utilising a TUR – NZFS design. This will trial several plantation forestry species at a range of stocking rates over shorter rotations and highly stocked coppicing species over short repetitive harvest cycles in different New Zealand regions. The goal of the programme is to identify the value of approaches to managing alternative species and regimes in different regions which can lead to an increased volume of woody biomass. We require suppliers with evidence in the ability to establish forestry research trials across New Zealand as well as collect and document early growth data.
This opportunity is targeted in six regions: Northland, Central North Island, Gisborne, Wellington, Nelson, and Canterbury. Invited suppliers will have the flexibility to bid for one or more regions, ensuring a broad range of capability and options are available. MPI have identified trial options for six sites across the listed regions. These sites range between two and five hectares in size and cover a range of land types. The successful supplier will fit the TUR – NZFS design to each site and establish the trial in up to six regions. It is intended for the supplier/s to undertake this total work over two planting seasons and three years. After this time the programme will be handed back over to TUR – NZFS for ongoing maintenance and monitoring.
