Overview

This procurement relates to the delivery of the Lyttelton Timeball Rebuild Project.
The Timeball Station, located at No. 2 Reserve Terrace, Lyttelton, was a registered Category I historic
place and under the ownership of the Heritage New Zealand. Timeball Station suffered major damage
during the Canterbury earthquakes of September 2010 - June 2011. Heritage New Zealand undertook
controlled dismantling on the basis of engineering and conservation architect advice. Some of this
dismantling work was compromised by partial collapse of the building on 13 June 2011. Since then, the
site has been cleared to the ground level of the building, with some remaining foundation and wall
material still in place. The lawn has been reinstated and a robust fence placed around the property to
secure the site as a ruin until construction commences.
The Lyttelton Timeball Station was one of New Zealand’s most significant historic buildings and had a
global maritime connection as one of the last few remaining operational Timeball Stations. Built in
1876 to provide timekeeping services to ships in Lyttelton Harbour and, cared for by Heritage New
Zealand, the Timeball Station continued to mark the time by dropping a Timeball from the tower every
day. That changed in 2011 when the earthquake on 22 February damaged the building beyond repair.
Careful dismantling and salvage work has allowed as much material as possible to be stored for future
use. Heritage New Zealand is preparing to restore this historic and internationally significant maritime
site. The purpose of this project is to return the familiar Timeball presence to the Lyttelton skyline, to
the community, and to New Zealand, in the spirit of the original buildings using as much original
material as possible.
The Heritage New Zealand Board has given approval for the project to proceed with the reinstatement
of the iconic Timeball tower building only, the Timeball mechanism, flagstaff and landscaping. Note
that the original ancillary building attached to the tower does not currently form part of the scope of
the project.
The project is currently underway with detailed design and fundraising.
