Overview

The opportunity
Over the past few months, local community representatives have worked together to design a new service to support Māori experiencing mental health challenges in Te Awakairangi | Hutt Valley. The aim of this mahi is to improve mental health and addiction outcomes for Māori in the area, with support from Mental Health Addiction & Intellectual Disability Services (MHAIDS).

Last year, a community delivery model was designed by a rōpū of community stakeholders. You can find out more about the work on our website:
https://www.mhaids.health.nz/about-us/change-programme/te-awakairangi-maori-mha/

We are now seeking to establish the first iteration of a culturally led, clinically partnered service. We’re looking to partner with a community provider who can deliver this service on our behalf.

This is a historic opportunity to set up a service that provides culturally led support to Māori in Te Awakairangi, aiming to reduce inequities in mental health outcomes for Māori. We anticipate this service will also help reduce wait times for assessment and treatment.

What we need
We are seeking a provider that is based in Te Awakairangi with experience in delivering culturally appropriate support to Māori clients / tāngata whaiora with moderate to severe mental health and/or addiction needs. The service should apply Māori models of care and offer Māori therapies to support the clinical aspect of the service.

The provider must have the capability, experience and infrastructure to deliver specialist clinical Māori mental health and addiction services. A Māori approach must be at the core of everything the provider does, and Hauora Māori providers are strongly encouraged to consider responding.

This contract will involve working alongside Mana whenua, other local NGOs and MHAIDS to deliver clinical mental health services for Māori in Te Awakairangi.

Kaimahi will be expected to work within a Te Ao Māori framework, providing clinical services to tangata whaiora with moderate to severe mental health needs, in collaboration with other Māori services and MHAIDS services in the area.
