Overview

Department of Conservation has an opportunity for undertaking physical works at Hannahs Clearing, Haast for the protection of a legacy landfill currently eroding on the beach. This is an opportunity for capable and experienced contractors to participate and contribute in our efforts of protecting the environment and community nestled on the West Coast.

To achieve protection of the eroding landfill, a rock wall along ~285m section of the beach is proposed and will comprise of the following:
(a) Removal of Existing Material on beach to Waste: Remove eroded waste and dispose of responsibly where possible. Waste is non-contaminated and includes timber, car bodies, other industrial waste
(b) Rock Supply and Construction of Rock Wall Coastal Protection: Delivery of materials from Principal's identified supplier of Quarry Rock, and the construction of a rock wall as per coastal engineer's design and specifications.
(c) Liaise with local community noting there is a likely element of community engagement where local support may be required.

This project is addressing an ongoing erosion issue with urgency, the Department encourages suppliers who have prior experience undertaking earthworks, hauling and construction in a coastal environment to participate. The construction will require machinery such as excavators and dumper trucks for the removal of waste, excavation of wall footing, carting of waste and delivery of rock.
