Overview

The Department of Conservation (DOC) has a future procurement opportunity for undertaking physical works to build a 1.7km raised boardwalk in the Waipoua Forest in Northland.

These works will see the delivery of Phase Two of the Rākau Rangatira, a significant infrastructure project that seeks to protect the health of Waipoua Forest from the effects of tourism at icon sites including, Tāne Mahuta, Te Matua Ngahere, the Four Sisters, and other kauri giants, delivered in partnership with Te Iwi O Te Roroa.

This is an opportunity for capable and experienced contractor(s) to deliver high-quality, long-lasting visitor infrastructure to enable immersive experiences for visitors while contributing to our efforts of protecting the forest from the irreversible spread of Kauri Dieback disease.

Construction will require the demolition and disposal of the existing end-of-life boardwalk, vegetation removal within a sensitive rainforest environment and construction of a new boardwalk and viewing platforms. The design will be in line with the new infrastructure at Tāne Mahuta, completed last year as the first phase of Rākau Rangatira.

We anticipate going to market to source a main contractor within Q2 of 2025 to enable physical works to commence early 2026. We may also go to market to source key material suppliers for MCA treated timber, FRP mini-mesh decking and stainless-steel balustrades. Successful material suppliers will be nominated as preferred suppliers for the main contractor.

DOC encourages suitable suppliers who have prior experience in constructing high-quality, world class visitor infrastructure in remote areas, using light weight machinery to minimise environmental damage, and helicopter operations including underslung loads to register their interest. Please note, Rule 5 of the Biosecurity (National PA Pest Management Plan) Order 2022 for earthworks within a ‘Kauri hygiene zone’ will apply to this contract.

RFx documents and details will be notified to the interested suppliers via GETS.

DOC is not taking questions at this time. Future Procurement Opportunities are to advise the market of potential upcoming opportunities which may or may not be progressed. If the project is progressed, you will be notified. Any further information about this opportunity will be available on GETS if/when we go to market.
