DOC's radio network consists of sites that are strategically positioned to provide radio services for staff safety and to support them in the operational areas across the country. The radio network contains approximately 130 VHF sites of which about 80% are solar powered. There are also 4 mains-powered HF radio stations.
These self-contained radio installations are mostly placed in remote rural locations, with the HF sites being accessible by road and four-wheel drive vehicles. However, the VHF network sites typically require helicopter access, having elevations of 1000m or more above sea level, and are subject to a range of environmental and changeable climatic conditions. Some sites are not located on conservation land (e.g. private, local/regional council).
The radio network also consists of approximately 1500 handheld devices, 200 fixed location base stations and 700 units installed in DOC’s vehicle fleet. The vehicle units are installed and removed in line with the departments vehicle replacement program which is typically every 3 to 5 years.
The radio network is considered as critical infrastructure for both the support of field operations and for the benefits it provides in protecting the Health and Safety of DOC’s field personnel.
And the external service provider is being sought to undertake the following:
• Provides a service desk for the co-ordination of services
• Provides updated records from changes through service activities
• Track and Manage land lease arrangements
• Maintenance and Repair Services at sites on instruction from DOC, namely
o Faulty equipment investigation and replacement
o Battery and solar panel replacement
o Building/mast repairs and maintenance
o Moves, adds and changes of radio network equipment at site
o New site builds
o Site reconfigurations
o Moves, adds and changes of radio equipment at offices and huts
o Installation and Removal of vehicle radios
