Overview

The Dunedin Tunnels Trail (DTT) is a project in the Dunedin Urban Cycleways suite of works in the Dunedin City Council (DCC) Long Term Plan (LTP) 2021/2031. The project involves the construction of a 15km cycle and walking path between Dunedin and Mosgiel. For the 2024/25 a budget has been allocated to progress a section of the trail.

The Dunedin Tunnels Trail Trust (the Trust) has been working on the trail for several years and DCC is working in partnership with the Trust under a Memorandum of Understanding, particularly in relation to the Chain Hills tunnel.
This contract is an opportunity to construct a 1.55km section of trail either side of Chain Hills tunnel. The Trust propose to create a loop track over Chain Hills, creating an additional recreational opportunity alongside the trail once the proposed contract works are completed.

It is important for us that we work with a contractor experienced in civil works, we want this work completed safely and to a high standard. Time is important, we want to partner with a contractor who has the resources and expertise to get this work done on time and within budget. This project has been driven by the community and the Trust is a key stakeholder. We want to engage a contractor that has a vested interest in our city, that can build good relationships with the Trust and who have a track record of delivering positive outcomes.

It is desirable this work is completed by 20 October 2025, and we want to engage with a contractor who will make this happen.

Future stages of the trail may be developed by either the DCC or the Trust. At this stage, no timeline or funding has been confirmed for completing the remainder of the trail.
