The River Engineering section at Environment Canterbury manages 59 river and drainage rating districts of varying sizes. The Ashburton Hinds Drainage Scheme is one of the largest drainage schemes by length and has an extensive network of over 409 km of drains. Drains in the Ashburton Hinds area are mechanically cleared and/or sprayed with herbicides as part of Environment Canterbury’s routine maintenance every year.
• What we want:
We want to build a positive partnership with competent contractor who is committed to excellent operational and environmental management in undertaking mechanical drain clearance in the Ashburton Hinds area.
Mechanical drain clearance involves removing heavy aquatic weed growth and some sediment using an appropriate bucket attached to a hydraulic excavator or a tractor- mounted digger.
The exact scope and timing of the work varies each year depending on the climate and weed growth, but it is typically undertaken between November and April.
