The Reefton Campground Accommodation Project addresses critical accommodation shortages in Reefton, driven by rapid growth in the mining, tourism, and service sectors.
The project aims to construct four double cabins and two single cabins at the Reefton Campground within the Reefton Recreation Reserve. These units will provide short-term housing for workers and later be repurposed as visitor accommodation, enhancing both workforce support and tourism capacity for Reefton.
The proposed cabins may be constructed on or off site.
This project aligns with BDC’s strategies for local development. By supporting economic growth and increasing accommodation capacity, it complements Reefton’s tourism objectives and addresses demands from expanded mining operations and a shortage of worker accommodation.
Potential impacts include economic growth through local employment, subcontractor engagement, and long-term tourism enhancement. Socially, the project alleviates worker housing pressures and promotes improved community infrastructure. Environmental considerations will be addressed through resource consent conditions, noise mitigation (NZTA consultation), and sustainable design features to minimise operational costs.
The Reefton Campground Accommodation Project Group and BDC have approved the project to go to final working drawings and design specifications, based on the agreed preliminary design work. The Designers expect to complete the final drawings and specifications, ready to apply for the building consent, by 31 December 2024.
Consultation with NZTA is needed as the site is within 50m of the State Highway and therefore has requirements in relation to noise reduction. This will also be completed as part of the final design work.
The Land Use Consent and Assessment of Environmental Assessment (AEE) are currently being finalised in conjunction with the final cabin and landscaping design work and pending Building Consent application. Resource Consent and Building Consent documentation is expected to be completed and lodged in early December.
This procurement seeks to secure a building contractor to construct and install the cabins on site.
