Drilling is being undertaken by BOPRC at the Poplar and Willow Nursery on Paroa Road, Poroporo for supply for irrigation and to further understand the confined groundwater systems in regard to recharge and sustainable allocation limits within the catchment. The lithological information that is collected during the drilling of these bores feeds into the conceptual geological models, with this information the extent of each of our aquifers can be mapped. Once these bores are completed, they are being incorporated into BOPRC’s monitoring network where groundwater levels, water chemistry and isotope testing is regularly undertaken.
During the drilling of the first bore BOPRC will be looking to stop drilling to pump aquifers and collect water samples, this will help us to confirm the depths of the following two bores. This may require the driller to install temporary screens to allow sampling to occur, where possible we will be looking to pair this with a 24-hour pump test. During the testing of various zone BOPRC may decide to take samples for Tritium, CFCs and SF6, it is important to note that while taking these tests the samples must be pumped and not airlifted as the presence of air will change the chemical signature.
The Earth Beneath our Feet model shows the approximate depths for each of the target geological units.
