Wellington Zoo Trust (Wellington Zoo) is a not for profit charitable trust, with Wellington City Council being the major funding partner, among other supporters.
Wellington Zoo is home to over 500 animals from over 73 different species and had 229,243 visitors in 2020/21.

This RFP relates to a partnership for management of the organic, recycling and refuse waste streams as an integrated service.
The partnership created will allow both the Contractor and Wellington Zoo to meet their objectives. Key objectives for the management of waste include increased recycling rates in both staff operational areas and visitor waste streams and a contribution towards the annual reduction target in GHG produced by Wellington Zoo.
The key outcomes to be achieved are:
• Wellington Zoo and the Respondent work in partnership for the entirety of the Contract term.
• Increasing the amount of recycling of material from Wellington Zoo operations and visitor waste streams.
• Decreasing the amount of refuse produced and landfilled.
• Contribution to reduction in carbon emissions (under the Toitū carbonzero framework) in terms of waste operations.

Wellington Zoo is seeking a solution that provides the processing of organic waste, the collection of recyclable materials and the collection of residual waste. We understand that new management options may arise during the course of the contract and we would actively encourage conversations with the preferred supplier/s at that time to identify options which may benefit both parties.
Wellington Zoo is seeking tenderers with a track record in the collection of organic waste, refuse and recycling from similar sized organisations. Track record with similar visitor focused organisations, bringing innovation to clients and working in partnership will be well regarded.
