University of Canterbury is seeking to purchase a LiDAR (optical) ceilometer.
A LIDAR ceilometer is a type of instrument used to measure cloud base heights and other atmospheric particles using Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology. It works by emitting laser pulses into the atmosphere and then measuring the time it takes for these pulses to be reflected by particles like clouds, aerosols, or even fog.
The existing instrument has been central to UC input into 9 international field campaigns and more than 10 papers in the last 6 years. It has been fully depreciated and come to its end of life.
UC is considering this instrument to be deployed to the multiple locations (e.g. Antarctica, and sub-Antarctica, Southern Ocean).
