The NZ Transport Agency (the Transport Agency), as the Registrar of Motor Vehicles (the Registrar), presently contracts with a third party to sell or otherwise dispose of the right to 1 or more letters or numbers, or a combination of both, allocated for use on personalised plates. In May 2011 the Land Transport Amendment Act 2009 altered the basis on which the Transport Agency is able to deal with such contracts. The Transport Agency now seeks to contract with one or more organisations for the sale or other disposal of the right to personalised plates.

The Transport Agency is looking for one or more Suppliers to deliver a fresh view of the personalised plates market in order to improve customer access and choice and to improve the level of revenue returned to the Transport Agency’s road safety program. The core service is a marketing and sales capability providing a quality customer experience in selecting a channel and a product and in paying for the product.
