The Council wishes to explore opportunities for local resource recovery initiatives in collaboration with residents, the commercial sector, the community/voluntary sector and the local boards in order to maximise reuse and recycling, and to retain as much material as possible on the islands.
The current contract for kerbside inorganic collections on Great Barrier has expired and the contract for operation of the landfill and kerbside collections expires in June 2017. Consequently there is a window of opportunity to trial a bespoke inorganic collection system for Great Barrier that could pave the way towards more holistic waste and resource recovery services in future. It is anticipated that the trial will commence from July 2016.
